October 4, 1957

Fifty years ago, on Oct. 4, 1957, the Space Age began as the Soviet Union launched Sputnik 1, the first artificial satellite, into orbit. Scaring the pants off the US government, this jump-started a scientific thrust in the USA that launched the States into an era of leaders in scientific research.

Did you hear the interview with the Sputnik scientist? It was really interesting-- essentially he said that Sputnik, far from being some grand plan on the part of the Soviets, was a rather adhoc thing, pushed for by a couple of scientists using rocket technology designed for warhead delivery, and that the Kremlin only reluctantly went along with their idea.... funny how history works sometimes....
