Okay, so for my birthday, we bought a mattress - yee haw! In the morning, we rented a U-Haul truck and drove back to Sacramento to pick up our new mattress. As we signed the bill, the sales clerk then asked, "Where do you find sheets for this size mattress?". Apparently "East Coast Kings" are different from "California Kings" - whose heard of these differences?! Well, we responded "Here, in Macy's - no???". So we went trembling over to the sheet department, and to our delight, we found a total of 3 choices for our sheets - but they were choices! We bought all sorts of things on sale and skipped out of Macy's with the first of several necessary purchases for our apartment.
En route home, we stopped in an Ikea. This photo we took of the shopping carts, is exemplary of how nauseous and overwhelmed we felt inside this store. The next image is of Andrew looking mightly thrilled. We purchased the glass conference table (above) for our kitchen table - it's terrific, but we cannot find interesting enough chairs for it. The white one is the best choice we have so far, but we really want some retro-looking artsy chairs. . . any ideas where we should look??
In the last picture is our bed, with our improvised comforter! Our real comforter is amongst the last 18 boxes of our things on Amtrak.

Happy birthday! What a total jerk I am for not remembering, especially after you BOTH sent me happy birthday emails not even a week ago.
Enjoy breaking in your new mattress! (I mean that innocently and chastely.)
Happy Birthday, and many more! Definitely find out where the used furniture stores are & consignment shops...even the Salvation Army & Goodwill. What's junk to some is treasure to others! Also find out when trash pick up days are for the swanky neighborhoods, then cruise those streets the night before & find all sorts of goodies! I did my apartment in NYC that way years ago: Park Avenue people tossed the best stuff, like marble based lamps, cool wicker baskets, even got a good iron that way and a great 3-speed bike that way! Save a ton of moola & help the world at the same time (reduce, reuse, recycle)! Hey, you're Yankees...be proud about outfitting your new digs with castoffs! O.K. That's all the advice I have for now. Glad you made it safely across the USA. Love your blogs...keep them coming!
