Santa Fe, NM to Flagstaff, AZ

We awoke and had a terrific breakfast with Lucy (Andrew's Aunt) and Michael (Andrew's Uncle John's sister's partner).

Around 10AM, we headed West on I-40 (old Rte 66). We debated going South, a few hours out of the way, through Phoenix and avoiding potential weather in Flagstaff. BUT, we decided to risk it and about 25 miles outside Flagstaff hit some sleet then snow.

Before the snow, the drive was absolutely beautiful - tumbleweed being blown across the highway and plains with beautiful rock formations.

We got a hotel in Flagstaff, went out for some dinner at 5PM and are generally sitting around. The snow is supposed to stop by tomorrow morning, and we'll see how the roads look before heading out. Flagstaff is actually at 7000ft in altitude, so once we get out of the city, the altitude will drop, and the weather should have only been rain elsewhere. We will see tomorrow. Meanwhile, we may see Pan's Labyrinth which is playing a few blocks from our hotel.

If the weather is okay tomorrow, we will try to make it to Thousand Oaks, CA - just north of LA - to see JB and Tom (Needlemom's sister and brother-in-law) - about 500 miles.

[approximately 383 miles]

Matt's sister lived in Flagstaff for a year. She was not a huge fan. Among other complaints, she said she only found one Chanukah card in the entire city during the winter holiday gift-giving season. And it was a really crappy one at that. Here ends my knowledge of Flagstaff.
